The chihuahua is a companion dog whose origin can be traced to Mexico. Similar dogs have also been found as skeletons and depictions in older paintings in Egypt and Malta, so its origin is still not entirely clear.

The breed is small but has a strong pack and owner instinct. Intruders receive a good "telling off" only to then demand to cuddle with the dog. The chihuahua is an active dog and wants to join in everything from agility to lounging on the sofa.
