FAQs about HUMLE's Handmade Soaps
What is a handmade soap?
A handmade soap is crafted by hand in small batches using natural ingredients. HUMLE's soaps are cold-processed, meaning they are not heated during manufacturing. This preserves the nourishing properties of the raw materials, as well as the naturally formed glycerin which moisturizes the skin.
What does "cold-processed soap" mean?
Cold-processed soap is made without external heat – oils and sodium hydroxide (lye) are mixed at a low temperature. This process allows the soap to retain its natural fats, glycerin, and nutrients, resulting in a mild and moisturizing soap.
What does it mean that the soap contains 8% glycerin and 3% superfatting?
Glycerin is a natural humectant that forms during the saponification process. In HUMLE's soaps, a full 8% of glycerin is retained, which is more than in many moisturizers (which often contain around 5%). This helps the skin retain its moisture.
Superfatting means that 3% of the nourishing oils are not saponified – they remain in the soap, providing extra nourishment and softness. The result is a soap that cleanses without drying out.
Do the soaps contain synthetic fragrances?
No. All our soaps are scented exclusively with genuine essential oils, extracted from flowers, leaves, and plants. They are natural, aromatherapeutic, and gently volatile – meaning the scent is milder and more subtle than in soaps with synthetic perfume oils. They smell clean, natural, and elegantly fade after use, instead of "lingering" on the skin.
Are the soaps suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes. Our soaps are free from synthetic additives, preservatives, perfume oils, and harsh surfactants. They are mild enough for sensitive skin, and we also offer unscented varieties for extra sensitivity.
Can I use the soap for my entire body?
Absolutely! The soaps are suitable for hands, body, and even face. Some customers also use them as shampoo bars – especially those who use fewer hair products in their routine.
What is the shelf life?
The soap lasts for at least 5 years after opening – provided you allow it to dry properly between uses. Many find that the soap lasts surprisingly long due to its solid, concentrated form.
How should I store the soap?
Allow it to air dry and remain dry between uses, preferably on a soap dish with drainage. Avoid letting the soap stand in water – this will make it soft and dissolve more quickly.
Are your soaps organic?
Yes. We use organic oils, butters, and essential oils in our soaps. Lye (sodium hydroxide), used in the saponification process, is also completely consumed and does not remain in the final product.
Do your soaps contain palm oil?
No, we do not use palm oil in any of our soaps. Instead, we choose other plant-based oils that are more sustainable and ethically sourced.
Are the soaps vegan?
Yes. The soaps contain only vegetable oils.
What is the difference between solid and liquid soap?
Solid soap is concentrated, water-free, and requires no preservatives. It is more environmentally friendly (less packaging, less water, longer shelf life) and gentle on the skin. Liquid soap often contains water and must be preserved to prevent bacterial growth.
